Dendrochirus brachypterus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Shortfin Lionfish (Dendrochirus brachypterus) is a compact and ornate species with dramatically fan-like pectoral fins and bold banding in brown, white, and red. One of the smaller lionfish species, it is well suited to medium-sized aquariums and is less destructive to tankmates than larger relatives. Like all lionfish, its dorsal spines are venomous — exercise caution during maintenance and handling.
Feed live or frozen meaty foods: mysis shrimp, silversides, squid, and chopped fish. Train to accept frozen foods with a feeding stick — tongs or a long skewer make feeding safer. Provide caves and overhangs where the fish can shelter during the day (largely nocturnal). Do not keep with fish small enough to be eaten whole. Never touch or handle without thick gloves; venomous spines cause significant pain.
