Sorubim lima
Also known as: Shovel-nose Catfish, Duckbill Catfish, Lima Shovelnose
Origin: South America (widespread)
Sorubim lima ranges across a remarkable breadth of South American river systems, from Venezuela to Argentina, occupying everything from large turbid rivers to smaller clear-water tributaries. Its extremely elongated, depressed head and prominent dark lateral stripe make it immediately recognisable, and its more moderate adult size of around 60 cm makes it a realistic proposition for very large home aquaria.
In the wild, Sorubim lima is a nocturnal ambush predator that positions itself head-down among submerged roots and branches to ambush passing fish. Captive specimens exhibit this same characteristic head-down resting posture, which can alarm inexperienced keepers but is entirely normal behaviour.
This species adapts well to captivity and readily accepts dead meaty foods. Water quality must be maintained to a high standard, and the tank should include plenty of hiding opportunities such as large pieces of driftwood.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean water with good circulation. Tank: Minimum 800L; include large driftwood for resting cover; powerful filtration essential. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish fillets, frozen lancefish, large sinking sticks; feeds confidently after dark. Breeding: Seasonal spawner; no reliable captive breeding records. Compatibility: Large, robust tankmates; will eat fish it can overpower; semi-peaceful toward very large species.
