Sorubim lima
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
The Shovel-nosed Catfish (Sorubim lima) is a sleek and elegantly patterned pimelodid catfish from the Amazon and Orinoco drainages, featuring a distinctly flattened rostrum and a striking pattern of a dark dorsal band contrasting against a pale silver belly. A dedicated piscivore, it must be housed only with fish too large to fit in its mouth. A species for specialist large predator aquarium keepers with facilities to match.
Provide a very large aquarium (800L minimum) with excellent filtration to handle the significant waste output. Provide dimly lit areas with large driftwood and overhangs for shelter — largely nocturnal. Feed whole fish (feeder fish from a clean source), frozen silversides, and large frozen foods. Do not house with any fish that can fit in its mouth. Keep singly or with very large species only.
