Betta splendens
Also known as: Show Halfmoon Betta, IBC Halfmoon, Competition Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Show-grade halfmoon bettas are bred and selected to meet the International Betta Congress (IBC) show standards, meaning they must exhibit a caudal fin spread of exactly 180 degrees with perfectly straight upper and lower edges, matching dorsal and anal fins, clean body colouration, and no fin defects. These are the pinnacle of halfmoon breeding and each fish is evaluated for show potential.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.5-7.0, very soft and clean — show condition requires optimal water parameters at all times. Tank: minimum 20L, near-zero current; avoid any decoration that could damage perfect fins. Feeding: high-quality betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, live daphnia — conditioning diet for best colouration. Behaviour: males are extremely aggressive — one per tank; flaring should be managed to avoid stress. Compatibility: show specimens are best kept in species-only setups to preserve fin integrity.
