Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Showa Koi, Showa Sanshoku, Tri-color Koi
Origin: Japan
Showa Sanshoku (simply called Showa) is the third member of the Gosanke and is distinguished from Sanke by its black (sumi) base coloration — black markings appear on the head and wrap around the body. The interplay of black, red, and white creates a bold, dramatic pattern that changes as the fish matures, making each Showa unique over time.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, large-volume biological filtration critical. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; the sumi (black) pattern develops best in high-quality, stable water. Feeding: high-protein koi pellets in summer; wheat germ in winter; spirulina for color depth. Behaviour: active mid-water swimmer; patterns evolve dramatically with age. Compatibility: all koi varieties in appropriately sized ponds.
