Carassius auratus
Also known as: Shubunkin, Calico Goldfish, London Shubunkin
Origin: Japan
The Shubunkin was developed in Japan in the early 20th century to produce the calico color pattern on a single-tailed, streamlined body. Its nacreous scales give it a special luminous quality, and the blue body coloration is considered especially desirable. It is one of the hardiest goldfish varieties and thrives in garden ponds.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, tolerates a wide range — very adaptable fish. Tank: minimum 150 L or a garden pond; single-tailed fish need space to swim. Feeding: floating or sinking pellets, earthworms, and aquatic insects. Behaviour: active, fast, and alert; less prone to swim bladder issues than fancy varieties. Compatibility: other single-tailed goldfish; compatible with koi in larger ponds.
