Cambarellus shufeldtii
Also known as: Shufeldtii Dwarf Crayfish, Gulf Coast Dwarf Crayfish
Origin: Southern USA
Cambarellus shufeldtii is a small dwarf crayfish native to the Gulf Coastal Plain of the southern United States, where it inhabits vegetated marshes, bayous, and slow-moving streams. It displays a delicate pattern of brown and grey stripes or blotches over a cream background, with an active and curious disposition that belies its modest 4 cm maximum size.
Unlike most larger crayfish, C. shufeldtii can be maintained in relatively small aquaria alongside peaceful nano fish species, making it one of the more versatile ornamental crayfish in the hobby. It will spend most of its time foraging across the substrate and among plant roots, rarely venturing into open water.
Breeding C. shufeldtii follows the standard Cambarellus pattern: females brood small clutches of eggs under the pleopods, and the juveniles are independent miniature crayfish from the moment they hatch. They grow quickly with adequate feeding and can be raising in the parent tank if decoration provides sufficient shelter.
Water: 18–25°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; moderately hard, clean freshwater preferred. Tank: minimum 30 L, fine substrate, caves and leaf litter, hardy plants compatible. Feeding: omnivore — micro sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, leaf litter, frozen baby brine shrimp. Breeding: female broods 10–40 eggs; juveniles independent from hatching; raise in planted shelter. Compatibility: semi-peaceful — safe with small peaceful fish; avoid large predatory species.
