Crossocheilus oblongus
Also known as: Siamese Algae Eater, SAE
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia)
Crossocheilus oblongus is a slender, torpedo-shaped cyprinid native to river systems in Thailand and the Malay Peninsula. It is distinguishable from the similar-looking Flying Fox by its fully black lateral stripe extending through the tail fin and the absence of a distinct pale stripe above the black stripe. It is restless and industrious, spending most of its time grazing algae from all surfaces, and becomes less diligent as it matures and grows.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Tank: 120 L minimum; planted aquarium with good flow and surfaces for grazing. Feeding: Herbivore/omnivore; algae is primary diet; supplement with blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and sinking pellets. Behaviour: Generally peaceful; can become territorial with conspecifics in small spaces — keep alone or in groups of 4+. Compatibility: Excellent planted tank companion; pairs well with tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and most peaceful community fish.
