Betta splendens
Also known as: Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta, Traditional Betta, Red Veil Tail
Origin: Southeast Asia
The traditional red veil tail Siamese fighting fish is the form most people recognise as the quintessential betta. With brilliant red body and long, flowing fins, it has been selectively bred in Thailand for centuries and remains the most iconic freshwater aquarium fish in the world. It is an excellent choice for beginners.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — even basic tap water (dechlorinated) is usually acceptable. Tank: minimum 20L with a heater, gentle filter, and lid; planted tanks dramatically improve wellbeing. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; feed once or twice daily in small amounts. Behaviour: males are aggressive to each other and fish with similar appearances — one per tank. Compatibility: widely compatible with peaceful community fish; the classic community aquarium centrepiece.
