Macrognathus siamensis
Origin: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam
Macrognathus siamensis is a strikingly patterned spiny eel from Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, adorned with a row of large, distinctive eye-spots along the dorsal fin and intricate body markings. A popular and relatively hardy spiny eel compared to many larger relatives, it is calmer in temperament and manageable in moderately sized aquariums. Best maintained on a soft sandy substrate with driftwood and leaf litter for burrowing and shelter.
Provide a deep, fine sand substrate (5+ cm) for burrowing. Include driftwood, caves, and dense planting for hiding spots — this species is largely nocturnal. Feed live or frozen foods: earthworms, bloodworm, Tubifex, and small shrimp. Ensure a very tight-fitting lid — spiny eels are expert escape artists. May eat very small shrimp and nano fish. Generally peaceful with fish of similar or larger size.
