Datnioides pulcher
Also known as: Siamese Tigerfish, Siamese Tiger, Thailand Tigerfish
Origin: Southeast Asia
Datnioides pulcher is native to the Chao Phraya and Mekong River basins of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It is one of the rarer Datnioididae species in the trade and is distinguishable from the Indonesian species by subtle differences in bar count and body colouration. Like D. microlepis it is a laterally compressed predator with a large upturned mouth. It inhabits deep, slow-moving freshwater rivers. Its trade population relies on captive breeding as wild collection is restricted in much of its range. It demands the same high standards as other datnoids: pristine water, large aquaria, and a stable environment.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; pristine quality with low nitrates. Tank: Minimum 600L; open swimming space; robust filtration; large cave or driftwood shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; whole fish, prawns, earthworms; train onto quality floating or sinking pellets. Breeding: Rarely achieved in captivity; documented in specialist Thai breeding facilities. Compatibility: Aggressive toward conspecifics in small groups; keep solo or in groups of 5+; predatory toward small fish.
