Acestrorhynchus falcirostris
Origin: Amazon River basin, South America
The Sickle-fin Characin (Acestrorhynchus falcirostris) is a predatory, pike-like species from the Amazon basin, equipped with a prominent black spot at the base of its deeply forked tail and a mouth full of sharp teeth for capturing prey fish. A dedicated piscivore, it must be housed only with fish too large to be eaten. Its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and active hunting behaviour make it a fascinating species for experienced large predator specialists.
Provide a very spacious aquarium (400L minimum) with open swimming lanes. House only with fish clearly too large to be consumed — no fish under 20 cm. Feed large frozen foods: silversides, whole shrimp, sprats, and frozen fish pieces. Train to frozen foods over time if initially taking live prey. Maintain excellent water quality with efficient filtration for this active predator's waste output.
