Sicyopterus sp.
Also known as: Sicyopterus Torrent Goby, Waterfall Climbing Goby, Indo-Pacific Torrent Goby
Origin: Indo-Pacific islands
Sicyopterus is a fascinating genus of amphidromous stream gobies found across the Indo-Pacific, distinguished from Stiphodon by their larger size, more robust build, and the possession of both an oral suction disc (formed by the modified lower lip) and a fused ventral disc — an extraordinary double-suction adaptation for climbing waterfalls. Adults of many Sicyopterus species display impressive colouration, with males often bearing bright red, orange, or blue markings during breeding season.
In the aquarium, Sicyopterus requires strong flow, high oxygenation, and moderately hard, neutral to alkaline water — conditions that reflect the well-aerated hill streams and waterfall zones of its native range. Its larger size (up to 10 cm) means a more spacious tank of at least 100 litres is required compared to the smaller Stiphodon. It is a more active and impressive display fish, particularly when males are in breeding colour.
Like all amphidromous gobies, captive breeding of Sicyopterus is not currently achievable without marine larval rearing facilities, so all specimens in the trade are wild-collected. Responsible sourcing from verified suppliers and thorough quarantine are essential practices for this species.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 6–18, KH 4–12; strong flow and very high dissolved oxygen; conditions should mirror clean, fast-flowing Indo-Pacific hill streams. Tank: 100 L minimum; large smooth boulders with established microalgae; powerful directional flow; caves or overhangs for shelter. Feeding: Herbivore — grazes microalgae and biofilm; supplement with spirulina wafers, algae gel food, and blanched greens; larger size allows broader food items. Breeding: Amphidromous; captive breeding not currently feasible; all trade specimens wild-caught; source responsibly and quarantine carefully. Compatibility: Peaceful toward unrelated species; males territorial with conspecifics; avoid housing with small nano fish that may be outcompeted.
