Sicyopus zosterophorus
Also known as: Sicyopus Goby, Sulawesi Stream Goby
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
Sicyopus zosterophorus is a rheophilic amphidromous goby from clear mountain streams of Sulawesi. Like all Sicyopus species, it uses a suction disc formed from fused pelvic fins to cling to rocks in fast currents. Males are strikingly coloured in orange and blue. Its specialised requirements — high oxygen, fast flow, and hard alkaline water — make it a challenge.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, hard alkaline freshwater; very high oxygenation and flow. Tank: 60 L minimum; river-style setup with large smooth boulders and powerful current. Feeding: Omnivore; algae biofilm is the primary food; supplement with frozen small invertebrates. Behaviour: Males are territorial; one per tank; spends most time clinging to rocks. Compatibility: Species tank or with small, rheophilic fish that won't compete for rock surfaces.
