Osteoglossum bicirrhosum
Also known as: Silver Arowana, Aruana
Origin: South America
Osteoglossum bicirrhosum is a powerful, muscular predator from the flooded forests of the Amazon basin. Juveniles are kept by many fishkeepers but it rapidly outgrows all but the largest aquariums, eventually requiring tanks in excess of 600L. Its mouthbrooding behaviour and sheer visual impact make it a legendary species in the hobby.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.0, very soft and slightly acidic, mimicking Amazonian blackwater. Tank: Minimum 600L, very long footprint, extremely heavy and weighted lid — arowana are powerful jumpers. Feeding: Carnivore; large insects, prawns, earthworms, strips of fish, floating carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Surface predator; will consume anything that fits in its large mouth. Compatibility: Keep only with large, robust tankmates that occupy mid to lower water zones.
