Astyanax fasciatus
Also known as: Silver Astyanax Tetra, Banded Astyanax
Origin: Central and South America (Texas to Argentina)
Astyanax fasciatus is one of the most widespread and ecologically successful freshwater fish in the Americas, found from Texas to Argentina across an extraordinary range of aquatic habitats. In the aquarium, it presents as a robust, active, bright silver fish with a prominent dark lateral stripe and an energetic, confident personality.
This species grows relatively large for a tetra and requires a spacious aquarium. It is adaptable to virtually any water chemistry and is among the hardiest of all characins. Groups of six or more school actively and provide a dynamic mid-water display. Some minor fin-nipping can occur if the tank is overcrowded or the group is too small.
Feeding is completely uncomplicated: any quality aquarium food is accepted with enthusiasm. This is an ideal species for larger community tanks where robust, active character is desired.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, soft to hard (GH 3–25, KH 2–15); extremely adaptable. Tank: 120 L minimum; open swimming space; robust tank mates only. Feeding: Any quality flake, pellets, frozen foods; very undemanding and enthusiastic feeder. Breeding: Easy egg-scatterer; spawns freely; condition with live foods; use a separate breeding tank. Compatibility: Best with robust, medium to large community fish; avoid very small or delicate species.
