Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus
Also known as: Silver Catfish, Bagrid Catfish, Nigrodigitatus Catfish
Origin: West Africa (coastal rivers & estuaries)
Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus is the most widely cultured and commercially significant member of its genus across West Africa, prized as a table fish in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire. In the wild it inhabits coastal rivers, lagoons, and estuaries — environments that expose it to variable salinity — making it unusually tolerant of both fresh and mildly brackish conditions. Its bright silver colouration and deep body give it considerable visual appeal.
In the aquarium, this species adapts well to captivity, accepting a wide range of foods and tolerating moderate water quality fluctuations. It is primarily nocturnal, most active after lights-out. Adults reach 65 cm and require a large, well-filtered tank. Despite a semi-aggressive classification, it is not confrontational toward fish too large to swallow and makes a reasonable community resident in a large species-appropriate tank.
The Silver Catfish is rarely seen in the aquarium trade under its correct name, occasionally appearing as 'West African Bagrid' or similar generic designations. Its silvery elegance, hardiness, and interesting brackish tolerance make it an underrated species in the large-catfish hobby.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.5; tolerates mild brackish; strong biological filtration. Tank: 800 L minimum; smooth caves; can be kept with robust large tankmates. Feeding: Omnivorous; sinking pellets, prawns, earthworms, blanched vegetables; feeds readily. Breeding: Seasonal; reported nest-spawning with parental guarding; not achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; avoid small fish; suitable with large cichlids, other robust species.
