Metynnis argenteus
Also known as: Silver Dollar, Silver Dollar Fish
Origin: South America (Amazon and Paraguay basins)
Metynnis argenteus, the Silver Dollar, is a member of the Serrasalmidae family related to piranhas but entirely herbivorous. Its highly compressed, circular silver body is remarkably coin-like, giving rise to its popular name. A peaceful species that benefits greatly from being kept in schools of 5 or more, it makes a striking centrepiece in very large aquariums though plant-free or artificial plant setups are recommended.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 200 L minimum for a group; avoid live plants — they will be eaten; use artificial plants or robust java fern. Feeding: Primarily herbivorous — blanched vegetables, lettuce, spirulina flake, fruit and pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 5+; active mid-water swimmers requiring open space. Compatibility: Large peaceful community fish — big tetras, large barbs, plecos, large peaceful cichlids.
