Metynnis argenteus
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Metynnis argenteus, the Silver Dollar, is a large-bodied, disc-shaped characin from South America that resembles a bright silver coin. Highly active and striking in schools of 6+, they fill a large tank with constant movement and flashing silver reflections. Peaceful with all fish too large to bully; may nip at live plants. Best kept in a well-filtered tank with robust plants (Anubias, Java fern) or artificial plants. Popular in large community tanks alongside arowana, catfish, and cichlids.
Groups of 6+. Large tank 250+ L. Temperature 24–28 °C, soft slightly acidic water. Feed spirulina flakes, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets. Will consume most soft-leaved live plants — use tough species or artificial alternatives.
