Poptella compressa
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
The Silver Dollar Tetra (Poptella compressa) is a deep-bodied, highly compressed characin from the Amazon and Orinoco systems, resembling a small, gleaming silver coin as it catches the light. A schooling species that becomes far bolder and more active when kept in groups of six or more, it is peaceful and compatible with large community fish. Its moderate size means it should be kept with species too large to be accidentally swallowed.
Keep in groups of 6 or more for confident, natural behaviour. Provide an open-swimming aquarium with some planting along the edges. Feed quality flake, micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Tolerates a range of soft to moderately hard water parameters. Compatible with large South American cichlids, large catfish, and other characins. Avoid very small tankmates.
