Pangio sp. (silver form)
Also known as: Silver Kuhli Loach, Silver Coolie Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia
The Silver Kuhli Loach is a naturally occurring or selectively bred colour form of the Pangio genus, displaying a uniform, pale silvery-white to cream body with little or no banding visible. Found across the lowland rivers and swamps of Southeast Asia, it occupies the same ecological niche as other kuhli loaches — burrowing through soft substrates in slow-moving, dimly lit waters.
This variety makes an appealing contrast to darker substrates or richly planted tanks. Like all Pangio species, Silver Kuhli Loaches are social and should be housed in groups of six or more. They are completely harmless and mix extremely well with other small, peaceful community inhabitants. Their nocturnal tendencies diminish somewhat in groups, where the collective boldness encourages more daytime foraging activity.
Care is straightforward: a soft, fine-grained substrate, plenty of plant cover or leaf litter, gentle filtration, and a diet of varied sinking foods provide everything this species needs to thrive. A tightly secured lid is essential.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–30°C, soft and slightly acidic preferred. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, leaf litter, dense cover plants; secure lid required. Feeding: Sinking micro pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm; will scavenge uneaten foods. Breeding: Possible in mature, well-planted tanks; scatters small green eggs near plant roots. Compatibility: Perfect community fish; do not mix with aggressive or predatory species.
