Monodactylus argenteus
Also known as: Silver Moonyfish, Silver Moonfish, Butter Bream, Fingerfish
Origin: East Africa to Australia, Indo-Pacific estuaries
Monodactylus argenteus is a widely distributed species found from East Africa to Australia, inhabiting estuaries, mangrove swamps, and coastal marine environments. Its laterally compressed, silver body with yellow-tipped dorsal and anal fins gives it an elegant, coin-like silhouette. Juveniles tolerate freshwater but adults thrive best in true brackish or marine conditions.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, specific gravity 1.005–1.015; adults prefer higher salinity. Tank: 300 L minimum; open swimming space with mangrove roots or driftwood for cover. Feeding: Accepts flake, pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. Behaviour: Active, skittish schooler; keep 5+ to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Compatibility: Other large brackish species such as Scats and Archerfish; avoid small fish.
