Hasemania nana
Also known as: Silvertip Tetra, Silver-tip Tetra
Origin: Brazil (São Francisco River basin)
Hasemania nana, the Silvertip Tetra from Brazil's São Francisco River basin, stands out for its warm coppery-gold body and distinctive white tips on all fins. It is an active and somewhat boisterous species — particularly prone to fin-nipping when understocked — but large groups of 10 or more significantly reduce this behaviour. Best kept with robust, active tank mates rather than slow or long-finned species.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness. Tank: 60 L minimum; robust plants and some open swimming space; a tight-fitting lid is advised. Feeding: Quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active and bold; can nip fins of slow-moving fish; keep in groups of 10+ to reduce nipping. Compatibility: Best with robust tetras, barbs, corydoras; avoid long-finned or very slow species.
