Simochromis babaulti
Also known as: Babaulti Simochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Simochromis babaulti inhabits the shallow rocky zones of Lake Tanganyika where it browses algae from rock surfaces. Moderately sized and less aggressive than Tropheus or Petrochromis, it is a solid choice for an intermediate keeper building a rocky Tanganyika community. A maternal mouthbrooder that produces small but manageable clutches.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 200L+; solid rockwork structures; algae growth on rocks beneficial. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake and pellet; supplement with nori or blanched spinach. Behaviour: Keep in groups of 6+; males competitive but less extreme than Petrochromis. Compatibility: Tropheus duboisi, Telmatochromis vittatus, or Cyprichromis in upper water.
