Melanotaenia sexlineata is native to the Fly River system of Papua New Guinea, inhabiting clear, slower-moving lowland waterways. The bold vertical banding is unusual within the genus and makes it immediately recognisable. It is not commonly available in the trade, making it a prized find for rainbowfish enthusiasts who appreciate rarer species.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 100 L+, planted with open mid-water swimming areas. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, pellets, and regular frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Peaceful, active schooling fish; displays best in mixed-sex groups. Compatibility: Suitable for peaceful community tanks with similarly sized fish.
