Skiffia multipunctata
Also known as: Spotted Skiffia, Multipunctata Goodeid
Origin: Mexico (Jalisco, upper Lerma River basin)
Skiffia multipunctata is one of the more ornate goodeids, males displaying an attractive pattern of small dark spots over a greenish-gold body, with orange-yellow fin margins that intensify during courtship. Like all goodeids, embryos are nourished via trophotaeniae and fry are born large and fully formed.
In the wild this species is critically endangered, restricted to a few highly degraded stream systems in Mexico's Jalisco state. Captive populations maintained by specialist keepers and goodeid conservation programs represent a vital lifeline for the species, and purchasing captive-bred specimens directly supports these conservation efforts.
Skiffia multipunctata is a moderately active, slightly assertive species that does best in a goodeid species or Mexican endemic community tank. It tolerates cool, hard water well and does not require tropical temperatures.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; tolerates cool temperatures unlike most livebearers. Tank: 80 L minimum; robust vegetation; moderate flow with good oxygenation. Feeding: Omnivore with herbivore tendency; spirulina flake, vegetables, quality pellets, and occasional live/frozen. Breeding: Small litters of 5–20 large, well-developed fry; gestation approximately 55–60 days. Compatibility: Goodeid or Mexican endemic species tank; males may be assertive; avoid delicate companions.
