Corydoras arcuatus
Also known as: Skunk Cory, Arched Cory, Topsail Cory
Origin: Peru, Bolivia, Brazil (upper Amazon tributaries)
The Skunk Cory, Corydoras arcuatus, takes its common name from the distinctive dark stripe that curves from the snout tip, over the eye, along the dorsal ridge, and sweeps down to the base of the caudal fin — a pattern reminiscent of a skunk's marking. The body is pale silvery-white, creating a high-contrast look that makes this one of the more immediately identifiable cories available in the trade.
Native to the upper Amazon and its Peruvian and Bolivian tributaries, C. arcuatus inhabits clear, shallow streams over sandy or leaf-littered substrates. In the aquarium it prefers similar conditions: fine sand, moderate flow, slightly acidic to neutral water, and plenty of cover in the form of driftwood or dense plant growth along the margins.
This species is hardy once established and does well in groups of six or more. It is active during daylight hours and spends much of its time exploring the substrate surface. Feed a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods to maintain condition and encourage natural behaviour.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; clean, well-oxygenated water important. Tank: 60 L minimum with fine sand, gentle to moderate current, and shaded resting areas under wood or broad leaves. Feeding: Sinking wafers, mini pellets, frozen bloodworm, and Tubifex; feed at or after lights-out for best results. Breeding: Spawns readily after a cool water change; eggs deposited on flat surfaces and plant leaves; remove adults after spawning. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; pairs well with small tetras, livebearers, rasboras, and other peaceful bottom-dwellers.
