Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Sky Blue Discus, Light Blue Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Sky Blue Discus occupies a softer, more subdued position in the colour spectrum compared to the intense Cobalt Blue or Blue Diamond strains. Its pale sky-blue body is traversed by gentle horizontal striping that gives it a watercolour-like quality — serene, atmospheric, and quietly stunning.
This strain does especially well in planted Amazon biotopes where the muted blue tones are complemented by green foliage and warm driftwood tones. It demands the same soft, warm, acidic conditions required by all discus, and a high-protein diet is essential for maintaining body condition.
The Sky Blue Discus is a good choice for hobbyists who want the prestige of discus keeping with a fish that is visually harmonious rather than intensely striking. It integrates beautifully into mixed discus groups and complements warmer-coloured strains.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; stable parameters essential for pale colour integrity. Tank: Minimum 250 L, planted Amazon biotope style, moderate warm lighting, fine dark substrate. Feeding: Quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, brine shrimp; balanced protein-rich diet. Breeding: Open spawner; spawns readily in stable conditions; ceramic cone or broad plant leaf preferred. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other discus, cardinal tetras, small peaceful characins and catfish.
