Pseudancistrus sp. (L095)
Also known as: Slag Pleco, L095 Pleco, Tapajós Armored Pleco
Origin: Rio Tapajós, Brazil
The Slag Pleco (L095) is a stout, heavily armored loricariid from the Rio Tapajós drainage of Pará state, Brazil. Its common name refers to the rough, almost slag-like texture of its dermal plates, which are more pronounced than in most related species. The body pattern is a subtle dark-on-dark arrangement of spots and reticulations that becomes more visible under strong aquarium lighting.
L095 is primarily herbivorous and grazes continuously on algae and biofilm. It benefits from an abundance of driftwood for both supplemental nutrition and as shelter. A diet of spirulina wafers, algae pellets, and blanched vegetables suits this species well. Moderate water flow and regular water changes maintain the fish in good health. It is one of the hardier medium-to-large L-numbers and tolerates a reasonable range of conditions.
The Slag Pleco is peaceful and can be kept in larger community aquariums with robust South American fish. Provide adequate cave structures and driftwood resting spots to minimise any territorial competition. Compatible with large cichlids, tetras, and other bottom dwellers. Avoid very small or delicate fish that may be outcompeted at feeding time by this powerful grazer.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate flow, regular maintenance. Tank: 200 L minimum; large driftwood, rock caves, moderate current. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood for grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning and improved water quality may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with robust large community species.
