Cobitis elongata
Also known as: Slender Cobitis, Adriatic Spiny Loach
Origin: Balkans (Adriatic drainages)
Cobitis elongata is an elegant, narrow-bodied spiny loach endemic to river systems of the western Balkans, including the Neretva, Krka, and adjacent Adriatic drainages. It is one of the most slender Cobitis species, with a notably fine body and delicate patterning of dark spots and blotches on a pale, slightly yellowish background. Its restricted range makes it an interesting species for the European biotope enthusiast.
Aquarium care for Cobitis elongata mirrors that of other European Cobitis: cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with fine sandy substrate for burrowing. It is a peaceful species that shares its native habitat with various cyprinids and can be successfully kept with similar-sized, peaceful coolwater fish. Water quality must be very high, as this species inhabits clean, oligotrophic Adriatic karst streams.
Feeding relies on small sinking foods — micro pellets, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and bloodworm. The Slender Cobitis is best appreciated in a Balkan biotope aquarium with appropriate décor of limestone rocks and sparse vegetation, replicating the clear, hard-water streams it calls home.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 10–22°C, moderately hard, very clean and well-oxygenated. Tank: 80 L minimum; deep fine sand, limestone rocks, sparse décor replicating karst streams. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm. Breeding: Seasonal; requires cool winter followed by spring warming to stimulate spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with European cold-water species; avoid tropical tankmates.
