Hemiodus gracilis
Origin: Amazon River basin, South America
The Slender Hemiodus (Hemiodus gracilis) is an elegant, fast-swimming schooling fish from the Amazon basin, instantly recognisable by a bold black stripe that runs from mid-body into the lower lobe of its forked tail. A nervous species that benefits greatly from being kept in large groups of ten or more, which reduces stress and encourages natural behaviour. A tightly fitting lid is essential as these powerful swimmers are prolific jumpers.
Keep in groups of 10 or more. Provide a large aquarium with open swimming space and moderate to strong current. Feed primarily plant-based foods: spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, algae wafers — supplement with quality flake. Very sensitive to stress from handling and sudden parameter changes — introduce carefully. Tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential. Compatible with large, peaceful South American community fish.
