About

Noturus leptacanthus is one of the smallest members of the Ictaluridae, reaching barely 8 cm and spending its entire life tucked beneath flat rocks and woody debris in clear, sandy-bottomed streams of the southeastern USA. Like all madtoms, it possesses venomous pectoral spines whose sting, while not medically serious, is notably painful and can cause swelling. Handle with care.

In the aquarium, the Slender Madtom is an excellent biotope species. It requires cool, clean, well-oxygenated water typical of Appalachian piedmont streams, and the tank should feature a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate with flat rocks providing many caves and overhangs. It is entirely nocturnal and will rarely be seen unless the tank is observed after dark.

Despite its diminutive size, N. leptacanthus is a predator, taking aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, and the occasional small fish in the wild. In the aquarium it accepts frozen bloodworm, small live invertebrates, and very small sinking pellets. It is a rewarding species for keepers interested in North American native fish biotopes and rarely kept in Europe.

Care Guide

Water: 15–22°C, pH 6.5–8.0, clean and well-oxygenated; cool stream conditions essential. Tank: 80 L minimum; fine sand; many flat rock overhangs; good circulation. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, small invertebrates, tiny sinking pellets; feeds exclusively after dark. Breeding: Cavity spawner under flat rocks; male guards; possible in well-set-up biotope tanks. Compatibility: Peaceful toward similarly-sized fish; avoid anything small enough to be prey.
