Percina phoxocephala
Also known as: Slenderhead Darter
Origin: Upper Mississippi drainage, central North America
Percina phoxocephala is a streamlined, elegantly built member of the logperch genus, characterised by its notably pointed, pig-like snout — even more pronounced than in other Percina — and a series of dark oval blotches running along the lateral line. It inhabits large, swift rivers with clean gravel and sand substrates in the upper Mississippi drainage, where it forages by flipping pebbles to uncover hidden invertebrates.
In the aquarium, Slenderhead Darters are best maintained in a large-river biotope setup: wide tanks with clean sandy-gravel substrate, scattered flat rocks, and moderate to strong current. Their longer body and more active swimming style compared to smaller darters means they need more horizontal space. They are relatively peaceful toward other species but males will compete.
Their feeding technique — actively overturning substrate particles in search of prey — is fascinating to observe and distinguishes them from the more sedentary ambush style of smaller darters. Live and frozen invertebrates are essential; dry foods are rarely accepted.
Water: 12–22 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; moderate to strong current, high oxygenation. Tank: 100 L minimum; fine gravel with pebbles; open foraging space; minimal fine silt. Feeding: Live/frozen bloodworms, blackworms, aquatic invertebrates; actively hunts by overturning substrate. Breeding: Gravel spawner; male guards loosely; multiple flat stones as potential spawning sites. Compatibility: Peaceful community darter; keep with similarly sized cool-water stream species.
