Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Smokey Angelfish, Smoky Angelfish, Smokey Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Smokey Angelfish carries a dominant genetic mutation that creates a distinctive two-tone appearance: the posterior half of the body and fins are suffused with deep charcoal-grey, while the anterior region retains the silver coloration typical of standard angels. The effect resembles smoke billowing from the rear of the fish.
Smokey is a dosage-dependent gene — heterozygous fish show the classic smokey appearance, while homozygous fish become almost entirely black and are sometimes referred to as 'black angels.' The smokey gene can be combined with other colour mutations to create interesting compound phenotypes.
Care requirements mirror those of standard angelfish. This is a robust, adaptable strain well-suited to community aquaria and an excellent starting point for aquarists interested in angelfish genetics.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; stable parameters essential for best colouration. Tank: 150 L tall format; plant with Echinodorus and Vallisneria; provide driftwood for territorial definition. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, vegetable flake; feed 2–3 times per day. Breeding: Breeds freely in pairs; homozygous smokey × smokey produces double-dark offspring — use carefully. Compatibility: Compatible with medium community fish; avoid fin-nippers and very small species.
