Potamotrygon scobina
Also known as: Smooth Back River Stingray, Rough-backed Stingray, Scobina Ray
Origin: Amazon delta & Marajó Island, Brazil
Potamotrygon scobina is found in the Amazon delta region and around the island of Marajó in Pará state, Brazil. It is distinguished from most other potamotrygonids by the rough, prickle-covered texture of its dorsal disc surface — a characteristic reflected in the species name, which refers to a rasp or file. Its brownish disc bears faint pale spotting and mottling that provides camouflage on sandy substrates. In the aquarium it behaves similarly to P. motoro, spending much of its time resting on the substrate or slowly cruising in search of food. Its unusual texture makes it an interesting display animal for keepers looking beyond the standard smooth-skinned species. Care requirements follow the standard potamotrygonid protocol.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderate (2–10 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite as with all rays. Tank: Minimum 400L, fine sand preferred, broad footprint; good external filtration with regular large water changes. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen bloodworm, prawn, mussel; feeds readily once established. Breeding: Viviparous; litters of 3–8 pups; standard potamotrygonid breeding approach applies. Compatibility: Large peaceful fish suitable; avoid substrate-disturbing species that stress the ray.
