Myloplus levis
Also known as: Smooth Myloplus, Smooth Pacu
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Myloplus levis takes its species name from the notably smooth, unornamented quality of its silver flanks — it lacks the conspicuous bars, spots, or vivid fin colouration of some congeners, instead presenting a clean, refined appearance. Found in the Amazon and Orinoco systems, it is a medium-to-large herbivore reaching around 34 cm and feeding in the wild on plant matter, seeds, and fallen fruits in flooded environments.
In the aquarium Myloplus levis requires a minimum of 900 litres, powerful filtration, and excellent water quality. It is less commonly seen in the trade than some other Myloplus species, making it a sought-after fish for collectors. Its subdued but elegant appearance rewards careful observation under good lighting that brings out the subtle iridescence of its large scales.
This species is peaceful and can be kept with other large, non-aggressive fish. It does well in groups of its own kind and is compatible with similarly-sized cichlids, large tetras, and catfish. A varied vegetable-based diet supplemented with quality herbivore pellets and occasional fruit keeps it in excellent condition. Avoid housing with aggressive species or piranhas.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; regular water changes and strong filtration. Tank: 900 L minimum; open swimming space; no soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Herbivore diet — fresh vegetables, fruit, algae wafers, herbivore pellets. Breeding: No captive records; not feasible in standard home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal companion for other Myloplus and large geophagines.
