Petroscirtes breviceps
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Smooth Sabretooth Blenny (Petroscirtes breviceps) is a small but feisty species with a mottled brown-grey pattern and large canine teeth used defensively. Unlike some parasitic sabretooth blennies that mimic cleaner wrasses, this species is less aggressively parasitic and can be kept in community reef tanks with careful selection of tankmates. It shelters in holes and crevices in live rock and feeds on small invertebrates and meaty prepared foods.
Provide ample live rock with small caves and crevices for shelter and territory. Feed mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen carnivore blends. Semi-aggressive towards very small, passive fish but generally compatible in a diverse reef community. Keep only one per tank unless paired. Reef-safe with corals. Can be mistaken for a cleaner wrasse mimic — observe feeding carefully after introduction.
