Lagocephalus inermis
Also known as: Smooth Toadfish, Smooth Puffer, Spineless Puffer, Inerm Puffer
Origin: Indo-Pacific (open coastal and estuarine water)
Lagocephalus inermis is the most aberrant-looking puffer species commonly referenced in aquatic literature, featuring a completely smooth, spineless body unlike the typically rough or spiny skin of most tetraodontids. Its streamlined, torpedo-shaped profile allows it to swim with surprising speed for a puffer. It is found in coastal, estuarine, and open-ocean waters across the Indo-Pacific and belongs to a genus more associated with marine rather than freshwater environments. It requires very large, well-filtered marine or high-salinity brackish systems. It is highly toxic and should never be consumed; standard puffer care protocols apply but the specific toxicology of this species is well documented. An extreme specialist fish with very limited availability.
Water: Marine SG 1.020–1.025 or high-SG brackish; temperature 22–28°C; pH 8.0–8.4; very high filtration capacity. Tank: 500 L absolute minimum; open swimming space critical; avoid sharp or abrasive décor. Feeding: Marine invertebrates: mussels, clams, squid, krill; feed to satiation every 2–3 days. Breeding: Not achieved in captivity; open-water pelagic spawner in nature. Compatibility: Aggressive predator; single specimen only; no compatible tankmates in standard setups.
