Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Snow White Discus, White Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Snow White Discus is among the most visually impactful of all domestic strains. True Snow Whites exhibit a pure, unblemished white across the entire body disc, with only the red eye and translucent fins providing contrast. The effect — particularly against a dark substrate and dark background — is of a luminous, floating disc of light.
Achieving and maintaining true white colouration is demanding: it requires strict avoidance of colour-enhancing foods (which can tint the white areas), very soft acidic water to prevent mineral deposits affecting skin clarity, and minimal stress — stress bars on a white fish are immediately and strikingly visible.
The Snow White is a prestige strain popular among competitive discus keepers. A healthy, full-sized specimen in perfect condition is one of the most remarkable freshwater fish that can be kept in a home aquarium.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft (1-5 dGH), KH 0-3; near-zero nitrates to prevent yellowing. Tank: Minimum 250 L, black substrate and background essential, diffuse low-intensity lighting. Feeding: White-pigment-safe foods: white mosquito larvae, mysis, lightly coloured high-protein pellets; avoid strong colour enhancers. Breeding: White phenotype is recessive in some lines; pair carefully to maintain white offspring percentage. Compatibility: Species-only or with very calm, non-competitive companions; minimise all stressors.
