Hypancistrus inspector
Also known as: Snowball Pleco, L181, White Spot Pleco
Origin: Rio Negro, Brazil
Hypancistrus inspector, the Snowball Pleco (L181), is a visually dramatic loricariid from the blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Its deep black to dark grey body is adorned with large, rounded white spots that are remarkably evenly distributed across the entire body surface, creating a bold polka-dot effect that is immediately striking. It is one of the most distinctive medium-sized plecos in the hobby.
As a blackwater species it requires soft, acidic conditions: pH 4.5–6.5, very low conductivity, warm temperatures of 26–30°C. Driftwood, leaf litter, and dark substrate complete the biotope. Caves are essential for shelter and breeding. Diet should be omnivorous, including both meaty foods and algae-based items.
The Snowball Pleco is regularly bred in captivity and represents a rewarding breeding project for intermediate hobbyists comfortable with blackwater chemistry. Males are territorial toward each other but peaceful with other species. Its striking appearance and moderate size (15 cm) make it one of the most popular specialist plecos in the hobby.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft blackwater; maintain low conductivity and avoid hard water. Tank: Minimum 120 L; driftwood, leaf litter, caves (one per male), dark substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, algae wafers, Repashy, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Cave spawner; achievable for intermediate keepers; male guards 15–25 eggs; blackwater conditions key. Compatibility: Peaceful with blackwater community fish; males territorial toward each other.
