Cherax snowden
Also known as: Snowden Crayfish, Papua Cream Crayfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea
Cherax snowden is a highland stream crayfish from Papua New Guinea, found at elevations where water temperatures are cooler and cleaner than lowland tropical streams. It presents a subtle but attractive coloration of pale blue, cream, and light grey, with occasional orange or red accent colouration on the chelae tips.
Compared to the more flamboyant Cherax pulcher, C. snowden has a more restrained elegance that appeals to keepers seeking a specimen that complements natural-style aquascapes. It is less aggressive than many large crayfish but will still defend its territory and should be kept alone or as a single male-female pair.
This species is moderately rare in the hobby and its care requirements are similar to other Papua New Guinea Cherax species. Clean, well-oxygenated water and ample shelter are the key requirements for long-term success.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; cooler and well-oxygenated highland-style water. Tank: minimum 100 L, rocky caves, driftwood, good surface agitation for oxygenation. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched greens, occasional frozen foods. Breeding: female broods small clutch; young are independent and can be raised alongside adults briefly. Compatibility: territorial — keep individually or as a single M/F pair with multiple shelters.
