Hypancistrus sp. 'Snowflake'
Also known as: Snowflake Pleco, Stardust Pleco
Origin: Venezuela (Rio Orinoco)
Hypancistrus sp. (Snowflake) is an Orinoco-basin loricariid prized for its elaborate white-on-black vermiculated pattern that resembles interlocking snowflakes. It shares the Hypancistrus requirement for warm, well-oxygenated, soft water and caves, and leans toward a carnivorous diet. Males are cave territorial but peaceful with dissimilar tankmates.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft; high flow and oxygenation essential. Tank: Multiple caves and smooth driftwood; minimum 150L. Feeding: Carnivore-leaning omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, Repashy Carnivore, sinking pellets. Behaviour: Nocturnal; peaceful with community fish; males territorial over caves. Compatibility: Good with medium community fish; avoid other competitive Hypancistrus males.
