Baryancistrus sp. (L085)
Also known as: Snowflake Pleco, L085 Pleco, Rio Negro Snowflake
Origin: Rio Negro, Brazil
The Snowflake Pleco (L085) is a strikingly beautiful loricariid from the upper Rio Negro basin of Brazil, featuring an intricate network of white or pale yellow lines on a deep black base that creates the snowflake-like patterning that gives it its evocative common name. It is a member of the Baryancistrus/Hemiancistrus complex and requires soft, slightly acidic conditions typical of Rio Negro blackwater.
In the aquarium L085 thrives in well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow and warm temperatures. It is an omnivore that grazes on algae and biofilm while also accepting prepared foods. Offer algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood, and supplemental protein foods. Adding tannins via Indian almond leaves or driftwood helps replicate the natural Rio Negro blackwater chemistry.
The Snowflake Pleco is moderately peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums with other Rio Negro-adapted species. It can be territorial around caves, so provide one dedicated hiding place per specimen. Compatible with cardinal tetras, black phantom tetras, altum angelfish, and other soft-water South American community species.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 25–29°C, GH 1–8, KH 0–4; soft blackwater conditions preferred. Tank: 150 L minimum; driftwood, leaf litter, caves, moderate to strong flow. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched veg, driftwood, occasional frozen protein. Breeding: Cave spawner; blackwater conditioning and warm temperatures required. Compatibility: Moderately peaceful; good with Rio Negro community species.
