Hyphessobrycon socolofi
Also known as: Socolof's Tetra, Pink Tetra
Origin: Brazil (upper Rio Negro)
Hyphessobrycon socolofi is a graceful, relatively slender tetra from the upper Rio Negro drainage of Brazil. Its body is a delicate translucent pink-silver, becoming more vivid in conditioned males, with lightly pigmented fins. Though not as boldly colored as some relatives, its subtlety and ease of care have maintained its place in the hobby. It adapts well to both blackwater setups and softer community aquariums and is highly tolerant of the slightly warmer temperatures typical of Rio Negro fish. Schools of eight or more display energetic, synchronized movement. It readily accepts a wide range of prepared foods and is among the easier Hyphessobrycon to breed in captivity.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Benefits from tannin-rich water or peat filtration. Tank: 50 L minimum; dense planting with open swimming lanes. Dark substrate preferred to bring out body color. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops. Breeding: Typical egg-scatterer; use very soft, acidic water and fine-leaved plants or spawning mop. Remove adults post-spawn. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for community tanks with small to medium peaceful fish. Avoid large or aggressive species.
