Acanthurus sohal
Origin: Red Sea (endemic)
The Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal) is one of the most impressive surgeonfish, with bold black and white horizontal stripes and a vivid orange stripe highlighting each side of the body and caudal spine. An endemic of the Red Sea, it is notoriously territorial and aggressive towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish. Only experienced aquarists with very large systems (600L+) should attempt to keep this majestic but demanding species.
Requires a very large aquarium (minimum 600L) with strong flow and abundant live rock for territory. Introduce as the last fish, or first if particularly aggressive. Feed a diverse herbivore diet: nori seaweed daily, spirulina-enriched pellets, mysis, and quality herbivore preparations. Do not house with other tangs — the Sohal will relentlessly attack them. Prone to ich — quarantine before introduction.
