Synodontis soloni
Also known as: Solo Synodontis, Solon's Squeaker
Origin: Central Africa
Synodontis soloni is a modestly patterned, medium-sized mochokid from Central African river systems that combines straightforward care requirements with a genuinely peaceful disposition toward most tankmates. Its muted spotting and grey-brown coloration may not rival the showiest Synodontis, but it compensates with its robust constitution and ease of keeping.
In the aquarium it is tolerant of a fairly wide range of soft to moderately hard water and adapts readily to commercial sinking foods. It spends most of its time patrolling the lower third of the tank, performing useful substrate maintenance and occasional scavenging of uneaten food.
This species is a practical choice for aquarists wanting a reliable, low-maintenance African catfish that will coexist peacefully with a broad range of tankmates over many years.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 200 L minimum; caves and driftwood; mixed substrate; standard African community filtration. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm; unfussy feeder that accepts most prepared foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; not documented in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with most medium and large community fish; a reliable, low-aggression bottom dweller.
