Apistogramma sp. 'Rotpunkt'
Origin: Brazil (upper Rio Negro)
Apistogramma sp. 'Rotpunkt' (meaning 'red spot') is an undescribed species from the upper Rio Negro in Brazil, recognised by hobbyists for a vivid red spot on the lower flank that distinguishes it from all described congeners. Males are strikingly colourful with blue-green iridescence and red-edged fins; females display characteristic yellow breeding colouration. Demands pristine, very soft blackwater conditions matching its remote Amazonian habitat.
Requires RO water with minimal mineral supplementation (pH 4.0–5.5, GH <3, KH 0). Add tannins from Indian Almond leaf, catappa bark, or blackwater extract. Provide dim lighting, heavy planting, leaf litter, and multiple caves. Feed exclusively live or high-quality frozen micro prey. Keep as a trio (1M:2–3F) per habitat tank. Water changes must use identical soft, acidic water to prevent shock.
