Betta splendens
Also known as: Spadetail Betta, Spade Tail Betta, Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
One of the more unusual and historically significant betta fin forms, the spadetail is characterised by a caudal fin with straight upper and lower edges converging to a single rounded point. This gives the fish a clean, streamlined silhouette quite different from fan-tailed varieties. Spadetails are relatively uncommon and appeal to collectors seeking something different.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — stable conditions suit this hardy variety. Tank: minimum 20L, planted with hiding spots near the surface; lid essential. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males are aggressive toward conspecifics — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community fish; a versatile and undemanding betta.
