Barbonymus lateristriga
Also known as: Spanner Barb, T-Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Borneo, Sumatra)
Barbonymus lateristriga is found in rivers and streams throughout the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. Its common name refers to the T-shaped or spanner-like dark markings on the flanks. A large and robust barb reaching up to 18 cm, it needs ample space and robust filtration. While generally peaceful, its size means it will consume small fish and can be boisterous with delicate tankmates.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 5–15). Tank: 250 L minimum; large open swimming space; robust plants or artificial plants only. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, fresh vegetables, algae wafers, and occasional protein foods. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; keep in groups of 5+; competitive at feeding time. Compatibility: Suitable with other large peaceful fish — large cichlids, other large barbs, catfish; will eat small fish.
