Spathodus erythrodon
Also known as: Spathodus, Red-Toothed Goby Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Spathodus erythrodon belongs to the Eretmodini tribe of goby-like cichlids and shares the same wave-battered rocky habitat as Eretmodus and Tanganicodus. It is distinguished by its slightly larger size and reddish tooth coloration. Like its relatives, it is a biparental mouthbrooder and requires flowing, highly oxygenated alkaline water to thrive.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high flow rate essential. Tank: 100L+; rough rocky substrate with strong powerhead; allow algae to grow naturally. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake and algae wafer; nori on a clip is welcomed. Behaviour: Monogamous biparental mouthbrooder; mating pairs display complex courtship. Compatibility: Eretmodus cyanostictus, Tanganicodus irsacae; avoid territorial Lamprologines.
